Recommended By WordPress.org:

To run WordPress we recommend your host supports:

That’s really it. We recommend Apache or Nginx as the most robust and featureful server for running WordPress, but any server that supports PHP and MySQL will do. Nevertheless we can’t test every possible environment and each of the hosts on our hosting page supports the above and more with no problems.

Note: If you are in a legacy environment where you only have older PHP or MySQL versions, WordPress also works with PHP 5.2.4+ and MySQL 5.0+, but these versions have reached official End Of Life and as such may expose your site to security vulnerabilities.

Ask for it

Here’s a letter you can send to your host; copy and paste!

I’m interested in running the open-source WordPress <https://wordpress.org/> web software and I was wondering if my account supported the following:

  • PHP 7.2 or greater
  • MySQL 5.6 or greater OR MariaDB 10.0 or greater
  • Nginx or Apache with mod_rewrite module
  • HTTPS support

Thanks!

Not required, but recommended for better security

Hosting is more secure when PHP applications, like WordPress, are run using your account’s username instead of the server’s default shared username. Ask your potential host what steps they take to ensure the security of your account.

1.4 Install Child Theme

What is a WordPress Child Theme?

WordPress child themes depend on a parent theme or a theme framework. Child themes borrow all features and appearance of their parent theme and can change them without touching the code of parent theme.

Most free and premium WordPress themes come with a lot of customization options. However, sometimes you may still need to add code to your theme manually.

If you add code directly to your theme’s files, then your changes will get overwritten when you update your theme. Child themes solve this problem by allowing you to add your customizations in child theme. This way when you update the parent theme, all your changes will remain intact.

Child themes are more commonly used with WordPress theme frameworks. These frameworks are robust parent themes that offer a solid base for theme developers to build upon.

Genesis is one such popular theme framework. There are tons of child themes available for Genesis that you can get from StudioPress.

To learn more about WordPress child themes, we recommend you to read our article on what is a WordPress child theme? Pros, cons and more.

Do you want to customize your WordPress theme with a child theme of your own? Follow the instructions of our step by step guide on how to create a WordPress child theme.

Having said that, let’s take a look at how to install easily a WordPress child theme.

Step 1. Installing the WordPress Child Theme

Installing the WordPress child theme is done in the same way installing any other WordPress theme.

Inside your WordPress admin area, head over to Appearance » Themes page and click on the Add New button.

Add new WordPress theme

There are two methods to install your WordPress theme.

Method 1: If your child theme is available as a free theme on WordPress.org theme directory, then you can look for it by typing its name in the search box.

Searching for a free WordPress child theme

From the search results, take your mouse to the theme you were looking for and then click on the Install button.

WordPress will now download and install your child theme.

It will also look for required parent theme. If the parent theme is also available on WordPress.org theme directory, then it will automatically install it for you.

Method 2: If your child theme came as a zip file, then you need to click on the ‘Upload Theme’ button. This will show you theme upload option.

Upload your child theme's zip file

Click on choose file to select the theme zip file from your computer and then click on ‘Install Now’ button.

WordPress will now upload the theme zip file from your computer and install it. It will also check if the parent theme is installed. If parent theme is available from WordPress.org theme directory, then it will try to install it. Otherwise, it will let you know that you will need to install parent theme manually.

Installing child theme alone

Step 2. Installing WordPress Parent Theme

WordPress will automatically try to install the parent theme if it is available on WordPress.org theme directory. If it fails to install the parent theme, then you will not be able to activate the child theme. It will show your child theme as broken on the themes page.

Broken child theme

Here is how to install your parent theme. First go to your parent theme’s website and download the theme zip file.

Now head over to Appearance » Themes page and click on the Add New button.

Add new WordPress theme

Click on the ‘Upload Theme’ button. This will show you theme upload option.

Click on the choose file button to select the theme zip file from your computer and then click on the ‘Install Now’ button.

Upload your parent theme's zip file

After installing both parent and child themes, you can go ahead and activate the child theme.

Note: Keep in mind that you don’t need to activate the parent theme in order to use the child theme.

The first thing you’ll want to do is log in to your WordPress website’s admin area. Once you have done that, click on the “Pages” menu item in the left navigation menu. This will take you to a list of all your pages.

CREATE A WORDPRESS PAGE

Click the “Add New” button at the top of the page. This will take you to the Add New Page page, which has the WordPress editor and all the settings for your new page.

In the top box, you’ll enter the title of your new page. The editor area is where you’ll enter the text of your page and insert images. As you are filling out the various fields for your new page, at some point you’ll notice that a permalink field will appear directly under the title. A permalink is often called a “slug” and basically is the address or URL of the page you are creating. WordPress automatically determines the permalink based on the title you entered. If you don’t like the permalink WordPress creates, you can click the Edit button next to it and change it to something more suitable.

Once you have configured the appropriate fields for your page, click the blue Publish button. This makes the page live to the public, but may or may not show up in your navigation menu, depending on how the menu is now configured (more later). You can also click the Save Draft button to save the page for later; in this state, the page is not visible to the public.

ADDING THE PAGE TO YOUR NAVIGATION MENU

From the WordPress admin area, hover on the Appearance menu item in the left menu, then click on Menus. If there are no menus yet, you’ll need to create one using the link provided. One of the menus will be shown by default if any already exist.

Once you have selected or created a menu, you’ll need to add your new page to it. The left sidebar has all the possible areas where you can add menu items. By default, it will show you a list of the most recently created pages. The first one listed should be your new page. To add it to the menu, check the box next to it and click the Add to Menu button.

You’ll see that it is added to the bottom of the list in the right pane. Now you can click and drag that page to the place on the menu where you’d like it to appear. Note that you can make it a child of any other menu item simply by dragging it under the parent menu item and a little to the right.

Once you have the menu set up the way you want it, be sure to check the appropriate boxes in the Theme Locations section. This assigns the menu to specific locations in your theme. For more information about where the menus are located in your theme, you’ll need to consult with your theme’s documentation or support team.

Click the blue Save Menu button to save your menu. Now you can visit your home page as visitors would see it to make sure that the menu looks the way you want it to.

How to add WPBakery ShortCodes

Shortcode is a WordPress specific code that allows inserting advanced features or content blocks within your site. WordPress shortcode is based on Shortcode API which is a set of simple functions that can be used by developers to create those content blocks.

Our team made this much easy to use. We created the list of shortcodes which are ready to use. All you need to do is only to add shortcode from our shortcode manager here:

here is a list of our shortcodes which are included in the theme:

You can start using them on the empty page or edit shortcodes which you get after      importing     demo data

Add New Page

Go to Pages > Add New to add a blank page. If you don't see the Backend / Frontend Editor, please make sure you have installed and activated WPBakery Page Builder plugin.

Edit Existing Page

Simply open your page and find the section/element you want to edit. Let's take a look at the structure of the pages.

WordPress Widgets

WordPress Widgets add content and features to your Sidebars. Examples are the default widgets that come with WordPress; for Categories, Tag cloud, Search, etc. Plugins will often add their own widgets.

Widgets were originally designed to provide a simple and easy-to-use way of giving design and structure control of the WordPress Theme to the user, which is now available on properly "       widgetized                           " WordPress Themes to include the header, footer, and elsewhere in the WordPress design and structure. Widgets require no code experience or expertise. They can be added, removed, and rearranged on the Theme Customizer or Appearance > Widgets in the WordPress Administration Screens.

Some WordPress Widgets offer customization and options such as forms to fill out, includes or excludes of data and information, optional images, and other customization features.

The Appearance Widgets Screen explains how to use the various Widgets that come delivered with WordPress.

Plugins that come bundled with widgets can be found in the WordPress Plugin Directory.

Installing Widgets

WordPress comes pre-packaged with a variety of Widgets. If those are insufficient for your needs you can install new ones by searching the WordPress Plugin Directory which is accessible from the WordPress Administration Plugins > Add New Screen.

Displaying Widgets

Existing Widgets in Existing Widget Areas

Before you can add a Widget you must verify that the Theme you're using supports Widgets (more specifically: Widget Areas). You can do so by simply navigating to the Appearance menu and looking for a        sub       menu                   titled   "Widgets".

If your Theme supports Theme Customizer then you can use the following Steps. In Theme Customizer, the live preview of changes is available.

  1. Go to Appearance > Customize in the WordPress Administration Screens.
  2. Click the Widget menu in the Theme Customizer to    access     to        the    Widget Customize Screen.
  3. Click the down arrow of        Widget              Area to list the already registered Widgets.
  4. Click Add a Widget button at the bottom of        sidebar       . It shows the list of available widgets.
  5. Click a widget you want to add. The widgets should be added in the sidebar.
  6. Preview your site and you should see the       content        from              your       new Widget.
  7. To arrange the Widgets within the Sidebar, drag and drop the widgets in the order you want or click Reorder link and click up arrow and down allow of each widget and click Done after the arrange operation.
  8. To customize the Widget features, click the down arrow in the right to expand the Widget's interface.
  9. To remove the widget, click Remove from Widget's interface in   above   step.

If your Theme does not support Theme Customizer then you can use the following conventional steps:

  1. Go to Appearance > Widgets in the WordPress Administration Screens.
  2. Choose a Widget and either drag it to the sidebar where you wish it to appear, or click the widget, (select a destination sidebar if your theme has more than one) and click the Add Widget button. There might be more than one sidebar option, so begin with the first one. Once in place, WordPress automatically updates the Theme.
  3. Preview the site. You should find that the "default" sidebar elements are now gone and only the new addition is visible.
  4. Return to the Widgets Screen to continue adding Widgets.
  5. To arrange the Widgets within the sidebar or Widget area, click and drag it into place.
  6. To customize the Widget features, click the down arrow in the upper right corner to expand the Widget's interface.
  7. To save the Widget's customization, click Save.
  8. To remove the Widget, click Delete.

If you want to remove the widget but save its setting for possible future use, just drag it into the Inactive Widgets area. You can add them back anytime from there. This is especially helpful when you switch to a theme with fewer or different widget areas.

When changing themes, there is often some variation in the number and setup of widget areas/sidebars and sometimes these conflicts make the transition a bit less smooth. If you changed themes and seem to be missing widgets, scroll down on the screen to the Inactive Widgets area, where all of your widgets and their settings will have been saved.

Enabling Accessibility Mode, via Screen Options, allows you to use Add and Edit buttons instead of using drag and drop.WordPress Widgets
